CAN YOU TRUST YOUR SENSES?
STUDENT TASK 1

1. Where does the most bending of the light occur in the eye?
The cornea bends light as the first step to making the image on the retina.

2. Describe how the lens works
Cows eye Diagram from exploratorium
Cows eye Diagram from exploratorium

This clear flexible structure makes and image on the
eyes retina and is flexible so it can change shape
depending on the focal point

3. Why do we squint when exposed to bright light?
we squint because bright light makes it harder to focus better

4. Which parts of the eye are involved in focusing?
the iris, the lens and the retina

5. Discuss the implications of losing one eye?
Losing and eye means that you don't have all you vision
try look at something then cover one eye see the difference

STUDENT TASK 2
Discuss: Visual impairment
Visual impairment is when one or more parts
of the eye or seeing part of the brain is damaged
or diseased causing partial or total loss of vision.

Do you know anyone who wears glasses or contacts?
Why? How do glass or contacts help?
Both my parents wear glasses. My mum multi-focal
glass so she can she things closer up and further
away with the same pair. My dad is short sighted
so he wears glasses to focus on close up objects.

Are there other solutions for people with visual impairments?
If you don't want wear glasses you can wear contact lenses
which do the same thing as glasses but sit on top of your eyes.
Use the resource from the last section to find out about
visual impairments

-describe two visual impairments
Cataracts- The lens of the eye is usually clear
if you have Cataracts the lens clouds and blocks
light making seeing harder.

Macular degeneration- the deterioration of the macular, the
most sensitive part of the retina, leading to loss
of central vision.

-describe some possible solutions.
Cataracts- Using laser surgery that remove the clouding.
Macular degeneration can't be cured.
